President’s Message

Message from the President of NOWU Tim Oribine

Sept 9, 2020

Hello Sisters and Brothers

I know that each and every one of you has felt the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. This crisis is unprecedented, and NOWU’s members are on the front lines showing great courage and dedication for patient care day in and day out.

We are devoting every available resource to make sure that employers are doing everything possible to protect and support NOWU members during this pandemic. Over the past few weeks, NOWU Leadership has been lobbying the Hospitals and government to provide all Hospital workers with pandemic pay. We are dedicated and driven to make this happen. It all started with our successful rally, petition to the government, constant phone calls and emails to stake holders. Make no doubt about it, we will leave no stone unturned. While some employers have been proactive by working with NOWU in setting up enhanced safety procedures, others have not taken necessary action. We are following up to identify and resolve these problems daily. It is important to remember you have the right to refuse unsafe work and bring in a Ministry of Labour H & S Inspector.

Servicing

Unfortunately, this pandemic has put restrictions on our servicing abilities. We are not allowed in many workplaces and therefore have been doing meetings via zoom. (Grievance/Arbs/Negotiations/Membership meetings etc.) We will continue to use the format for Unit/Local meetings as well for the safety of our members.

While some employers have been proactive by working with NOWU in setting up enhanced safety procedures, others have not taken necessary action. We are following up to identify and resolve these problems.

State of the National

We would like to thank all of you for showing patience, loyalty and perseverance as we begin to build and grow NOWU. We have doubled in size every year and expect to do the same this year. We took a fledgling Union that was being operated by inexperience and turned it into a viable and growing organization. We have established Local unions that have growing bank accounts and our members are seeing greater return on their dues dollars.

Expectations

You can expect the NATIONAL ORGANIZED WORKERS UNION to fight for the betterment of our members and their families. Don’t accept status quo. Participate in change!

Your truly,

Tim Oribine

President
